THE SPACE BEFORE

A FIVE-DAY IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE IN PUGLIA
The Space Before is an intimate five-day immersive experience curated by Blomour, developed in dialogue with the architectural sensibility of Japanese designer Nozomi Nakabayashi.
The experience is conceived as an invitation to slow down and listen to space before acting within it. Rather than starting from form or decoration, the process begins with observation, reading architecture, light, proportions, and material presence in order to understand a place before intervening.
Through drawing, spatial analysis, and hands-on work with natural materials, participants explore how form can emerge from context and collaboration, allowing space itself to guide the creative process.
Participants leave with a methodology and a heightened sensitivity that can be carried into their own creative practice, whether as designers, floral artists, architects, or as individuals drawn to exploring space, natural materials, and botanical installation with greater awareness.
THE PROCESS
The experience is designed for those who want to develop a deeper way of reading space and working with natural materials beyond decoration.
Over the course of the experience, participants will develop site-specific temporary installations within the spaces of Casa Maiora, responding directly to its architecture, light, and relationship with the surrounding environment.
The process unfolds gradually:
- from reading and understanding space
- to material exploration
- to collective making
Simple, intuitive handcraft techniques inspired by Japanese approaches to material and construction support the work, with a strong focus on presence, attention, and care.
SCHEDULE
DAY 1
Arrival & Shared Dinner
Participants arrive at Casa Maiora and gather for an informal dinner together. An opportunity to meet, share backgrounds and interests, and begin a conversation around nature, architecture, observation and making that will accompany the following days.
DAY 2
A Day of Listening to the Space
Through spatial, colour and light analysis, interpretive drawing exercises and collective observation, participants will explore how form emerges from context.
The day continues with a walk through the surrounding landscape, observing and gathering natural materials.
Working with locally available botanical elements, participants will create a series of maquettes while learning techniques for translating observation into form.
The day concludes with a reflection on the full cycle of making, considering the temporary nature and afterlife of an installation as it returns to the landscape.
DAY 3
A Day of Making, Observing and Refining
Participants will create a personal botanical installation, reflecting on the observations and ideas developed during the previous days.
The work will be followed by collective discussion, observation and the sharing of ideas, helping refine individual and group approaches to making.
DAY 4
A Day of Immersive Making
Creation of three site-specific botanical installations throughout Casa Maiora.
The day concludes with a shared dinner experienced within The Space Before installations.
DAY 5
Reflection & Departure
A final morning together to reflect on the experience, share observations and conversations, and bring the journey to a close before departure.
LOCATION
The experience takes place at Casa Maiora, part of Moroseta Homes, a collection of architecturally designed houses deeply rooted in the landscape of Puglia.
Casa Maiora is an architectural project by Andrew Trotter, built using local materials and traditional construction methods. The house features expansive indoor and outdoor spaces and a strong relationship with the surrounding landscape.
Casa Maiora is not simply a setting, but an active element of the experience, shaping observation, decisions, and the rhythm of making throughout the three days.
FOOD & SHARED MOMENTS
Alongside the working process, moments of pause and conviviality form an integral part of the experience.
A shared food experience curated by Giorgia Goggi in collaboration with Moroseta Kitchen accompanies the three days, with a focus on seasonal ingredients and time spent together around the table.
